Art Swap with Veneta Androva

The source material for Kathrin Hunze’s art swap was an animation from an earlier script by Veneta Androva with the slogan: ‘We collect, use and resell biometric data to provide you with the best service possible.’ Hunze took this dystopian sentence as an opportunity to formulate an alternative to the highly monopolized internet of now. Her project brings the social aspect of digital sustainability into play, such as preserving and sharing digital goods via digital commons.

She designed wellNet as a free, open-source programme that allows people to keep control of their data and, in contrast to our techno-capitalist system, experience a real sense of belonging. The video ‘wellNet: Help Yourself’ presents the two fundamental ideas of the programme: ‘Pay-per-Peep’ and ‘Xanadu’. Hunze’s ‘Pay-per-Peep’ concept radically reverses the usual balance of power on the internet: here, users are paid for their data. In ‘Xanadu,’ she creates a place for everything that would otherwise disappear in the endless data stream. It is a virtual landscape offering space for all digital files, securing their creative potential and reuse for different purposes. In the 360° video ‘Xanadu: wellNet project,’ visitors can explore this world for themselves.

Kathrin Hunze lives and works as a media artist and lecturer in Berlin. She creates video works, installations and performances in the area of moving images and new media. Her artistic research focuses on processes, mechanisms, and ethical aspects of new technologies and their impact on complex systems. She is a board member of the Medienkunstverein Berlin and part of the nox&honig and raumperspektive collectives.
